What is Tae Kwon Do?

The literal meaning of Tae Kwon Do is “Foot, Hand, Martial art.” However, Tae Kwon Do means much more than kicking and punching. It is a martial art that offers discipline, self-confidence, personal growth and character development. Tae Kwon Do is now an official Olympic Sport starting in the Year 2000 in Australia.

Tae Kwon Do consists of Poomse, Gyoroogi and Breaking. Poomse is a series of basic Tae Kwon Do movements or techniques. Gyoroogi is Tae Kwon Do’s sparring system based on techniques learned during Poomse practice. Breaking techniques builds the student’s self-confidence. The practice of Tae Kwon Do accompanied with the knowledge of philosophical principles nested in its techniques and Tae Kwon Do’s consistent emphasis on propriety leads to an active and broad-minded attitude to life in general.

The popularity of Tae Kwon Do as a sport is proven by the global Tae Kwon Do population estimated at 30 million participants in over 140 nations.
